— About
At AXIS, we're developing a revolutionary class of sustainable materials using cutting-edge fermentation and mycelium cultivation technology. Inspired by local agriculture and designed to meet the world's growing demand for eco-conscious solutions, our materials are more than substitutes — they're a whole new category.
Our journey began with addressing the environmental footprint of traditional leather, and we continue to innovate by tailoring mycelium-based materials to diverse market needs.
— Process
Our materials are made from pure mycelium — the foundational network of fungi — grown on agricultural by-products. This process is highly efficient, requiring minimal water and energy while producing biodegradable, functional materials. These Pure Mycelium Materials (PMMs) can be engineered into everything from leather-like textiles and threads to acoustic panels, PPE, and even biomedical applications.
We're developing this technology in partnership with the University of Kentucky's Barzee Bioprocess Engineering and Fermentation Lab, using Kentucky agricultural by-products — like sugars from locally grown corn — as the input.
— Applications
From fashion and furniture to health and safety, our mycelium-based materials adapt to the needs of modern industries. Whether you're designing sustainable apparel, acoustic interiors, or medical-grade products, AXIS materials offer a biodegradable, high-performance solution.
— The problem
Leather may be a natural material, but producing it comes at a steep environmental price:
According to × WWF
Water Waste
17,000L
of freshwater can go into producing a single square meter of leather
Land Use
1/3
of Earth's land is tied up in livestock farming
Carbon Emissions
18%
of global greenhouse gases come from the livestock industry
Slow Process
3 yrs
to raise an animal just to start making leather
— Our approach
At AXIS, we're building something better—from the ground up.
Our materials are made using agricultural by-products and fermentation, not animals. Here's how we keep it sustainable:
Everything gets reused or returned to nature
We turn agricultural leftovers into high-value materials
Our process uses very little water or energy
At the end of its life, it returns to the earth—naturally
Our materials can be produced near where they’re needed, reducing shipping emissions
Designed with reuse and regeneration in mind
— Performance
You don't have to choose between performance and planet. Our mycelium-based materials are:
